Composed based on Shuzo Takiguchi's eponymous poem Uninterrupted Rests. However, as the composer himself stated, the primary focus is on an approach using sound to convey the impressions and feelings evoked by the poem, rather than a direct depiction of it.
The first movement was composed in 1952. It was premiered in the same year by Takahiro Sonoda. At the beginning of this movement, there is an instruction: "Slowly, sadly, and as if conversing." It takes the form of a two-part structure. Within Uninterrupted Rests, this movement features what can be considered the only line close to a melody. Furthermore, the opening music recurs in the latter half.
The second movement was composed in 1959. It was premiered in the same year by Haruko Kasama. At the beginning of this movement, there is an instruction: "Quietly, with a cruel sound." It begins with 'ppp' (pianississimo), and the music unfolds based on quietness; however, this flow is occasionally interrupted by strong, percussive strikes that seem to emphasize the piano's percussive nature. The movement concludes with a contrast created by the juxtaposition of these two sounds in different registers.
The third movement was composed in 1959. It was premiered in the same year by Haruko Kasama. It is an homage dedicated to Alban Berg (1885–1935). As mentioned, the second and third movements were composed in the same year, but the third movement's beginning is inscribed with the words "Song of Love," contrasting with the preceding movement. Within Uninterrupted Rests, this is the only movement with bar lines, and it is written in 3/2 time. Consisting of only 13 measures, this movement quietly concludes with arpeggiated chords reminiscent of Berg's final work, the Violin Concerto.
