Composed in 1759. Nannerl was the nickname of Maria Anna Mozart, daughter of Leopold Mozart and elder sister of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Born in 1751, Nannerl began learning the harpsichord from her father Leopold around the age of eight. This collection is a handwritten music book, so to speak, a teaching material, compiled by Leopold to instruct Nannerl on the harpsichord.
The majority of the pieces are minuets, with the first 19 pieces consecutively consisting of minuets. The next most frequent are allegros, with over 10 pieces included. Other pieces include marches and polonaises.
The first half largely consists of simple and small-scale pieces. However, as the numbers progress, finer note values and ornaments increase, and rhythms become more complex. Additionally, there are works in variation form, some with up to 12 variations.
Leopold initially used this collection to instruct his son Wolfgang as well, but perhaps due to Wolfgang's rapid learning, he skipped through the order. (For example, the minuet of the 8th piece states, 'Wolfgang learned the first 8 pieces up to this point when he was four years old,' but the sequence then continues with the 19th piece → 29th piece → 11th piece.)
