Composed in 1884, this is a representative piano work from his late period. It is one of only five piano works by Rubinstein that exceed one hour in length. Of Rubinstein's 121 works by opus number, approximately half were composed rapidly in his twenties. His late works, particularly those from Op. 100 onwards, are characterized by their dense and austere nature. Each piece in Op. 109 is dedicated to a prominent pianist of the time, reflecting their individual artistic styles. Among these, the seventh piece, dedicated to Francis Planté (1839-1934), is the highlight of this collection, consisting of nine sections. It was published by Jurgenson in Moscow.
