A pianist, composer, conductor, and music educator born in present-day Moldova. He is regarded as a foundational figure in Russian pianism, which later produced numerous great pianists. He was said to have a commanding presence, with a large physique and a stern appearance reminiscent ofBeethoven. He performed throughout Europe from a young age and is considered the first successful pianist of Russian origin. He studied underLiszt for a period. His powerful playing was characterized by pushing the piano's capabilities to their limits. From 1848, he returned to his homeland, becoming a piano teacher for the Russian Imperial Family while continuing his performance activities. In 1861, he founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He left the Conservatory in 1867, returning as director 20 years later, where he made significant contributions such as establishing courses aimed at training piano teachers. His brother, Nikolai, was also a renowned pianist and founded the Moscow Conservatory in 1886.
