One-part Form
- a (measures 1-11)
- a1 (measures 12-22)
- a2 (measures 23-33)
Although there are three sections, the second and third sections are both developments (essentially repetitions) of the theme presented in the opening 11 measures, and are not considered sections containing new elements. Therefore, it is regarded as a one-part form, where a single theme is repeated with slight variations in figuration or added notes.
In the opening two measures, a gong (bell sound) and bells are invariably struck. In contrast, from measure 3 onwards, single quarter notes in the high register form a melody through staccato articulation. Thus, the theme encompasses two contrasting motifs.
Of particular interest is the opening bell sound, which is a perfect fifth of F and C. Subsequently, in measures 12-13, a perfect fifth of D and A is heard. In the final section, at measure 23, F and C are sounded simultaneously in the lower voice, while D and A are sounded in the upper voice. The simultaneous sounding of these two sonorities creates a more realistic representation of bell sounds.
