This work quotes a portion of J. S. Bach's Cantata No. 140, "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme". This is fragmented into various units and reassembled using techniques such as pointillism and collage.
The entire work is divided into three parts. The opening begins with a soft, floating impression, and after a while, fragments of the "quotation" appear, gradually gaining momentum as the work enters the second part. Following an overwhelming descent of arpeggios, a new melody is sung amidst the lingering resonance. A sudden climax then leads into the third part, but the recapitulation of the opening is brief, as the previously fragmented melodies are reconnected and emerge like a shadow.
This work was submitted as a graduate school completion project.
It received the New Work Award at the 29th PTNA Piano Competition. It was adopted as a required piece for the Grand Prix (Tokkyu) category in 2005 and published by Kawai Publishing Co., Ltd. in March 2005.
