The exact publication year is unknown, but according to J.C. Walther's Musicalisches Lexicon (1732), it is estimated to be around 1702. It consists of 20 preludes and fugues written in various major and minor keys, and five ricercares based on Protestant chorales. The preludes and fugues ascend chromatically from C major to C minor, encompassing all keys except B-flat minor, E-flat minor, G-sharp minor, F-sharp major, and C-sharp major, and also include E Phrygian. The key signatures are not always complete; in D minor, G minor, A-flat major, and C minor, one flat is missing, and in E minor, F-sharp minor, and B minor, one sharp is superfluous. The preludes range from 7 to 25 measures in length, with many being around 15 measures. Pedal is required only in the preludes, and even then, mostly for static pedal points, indicating it was not heavily emphasized.
This collection is also significant for providing musical material to J.S. Bach. Some fugue subjects in The Well-Tempered Clavier are believed to have been quoted from Ariadne:
- Ariadne No. 5, Fuga E-flat major, and Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I, No. 16, Fuga G minor
- Ariadne No. 8, Fuga E major, and Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II, No. 9, Fuga E major
- Ariadne No. 10, Fuga F major, and Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I, No. 11, Fuga F major, etc.
