It is in B-flat major and binary form.
- A [a (measures 1-4) + b (measures 5-8)]
- B [c (measures 9-12) + a1 (measures 13-16)]
- B [c (measures 17-20) + a1 (measures 21-24)]
Measures 17-24 are essentially a repetition of section B (measures 9-16). Therefore, although it is divided into three sections in the score, it is actually in binary form. This type of structure can also be observed in other works by Gurlitt.
The theme is found in the opening four measures. It is characterized by neighboring tones that form a smooth melodic line. The range is not extensive, and the piece generally conveys a cantabile (singing) quality. Section b is a development of theme a, and is more actively constructed with ascending and descending chromatic progressions.
