The main key is E-flat minor, and it is in ternary form.
- A [a (measures 1-4) + a1 (measures 5-8)]
- B [b (measures 9-12) + b1 (measures 13-16)]
It is in ternary form because it returns to the beginning from measure 16 via a Da Capo, concluding with an 8-measure fine.
The rhythm of 32nd notes and 16th notes in the opening theme is reminiscent of the beginning of Schumann's Piano Concerto. However, such rhythmic motifs also originated with Beethoven and were used among Romantic composers.
Section B is marked tranquillo (quietly) and is composed of longer note values, specifically 8th notes and quarter notes, without 32nd or 16th notes. The limited range also indicates a calm section. Furthermore, the left-hand voice precedes, and the right-hand voice ascends against its descending line, creating contrary motion, suggesting that this section also possesses polyphonic elements. It modulates to A-flat minor from measure 13.
