The Volga River is a great river flowing through western Russia, and this boat song is one of the most famous Russian folk songs. It is a labor song sung while hauling boats up the river with ropes, and it is included in Balakirev's 40 Russian Folk Songs, which he collected during his travels along the Volga River. Due to its immense popularity, the melody has been used in Glazunov's symphonic poem Stenka Razin and in the opera Siberia by the Italian opera composer Giordano, in addition to several arrangements for solo piano.
