“Abanico” is the Spanish word for “fan.” While fans might be primarily associated with Japan, they are also used in flamenco and are surprisingly common in souvenir shops in Spain. This particular piece was dedicated to María de Alba, suggesting Granados composed it with the intention of presenting it to her.
In the 18th century, the abanico played a significant role in the playful interactions between men and women. Knowing this, one wonders what sentiments Granados intended to convey in this composition. At the beginning of the piece, the instruction “ligando” appears. While this can be interpreted as “to play legato,” it is also a Spanish term used to signify “flirtation” or “making romantic advances.” From the sixth measure, the music seems to depict powerful dance steps. Listening to Spanish vocal music might help in understanding the atmosphere of this section. It would be interesting to express the contrast between strength and sweetness in a sophisticated manner.
