"Sassafras Gully Waltz" was composed to celebrate the 50th birthday of the composer's friend, Nicholas Routley, a pianist, conductor, and scholar. He lives near Sassafras Gully in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. The piece's style alludes to 19th-century Romantic piano music, which Nicholas loves. It is lyrical. "Sandy Stone's Waltz" was composed as incidental music for Barry Humphries' monologue "The Australian Cry," held in London in 1997. Sandy Stone is a character created by Humphries, described as "a serious, honest, kind, yet conservative person who accepts life as it comes." Notably, this waltz is a parody of 1920s popular music. "Annandale Waltz" was composed for Edwards' wife, Helen. Annandale is a Sydney suburb where the Edwards family lives. Helen is a piano teacher and a pianist. This piece was given to her as a Christmas present.
