Australian composer Ross Edwards creates a unique sound world. It seeks to restore the inherent power of music, possessing a ritualistic and spontaneous character, and inspiring an urge to dance. He regards the work of a composer as his calling, boldly forging his own path. He is unafraid to reject conventional assumptions and believes in music's inherent narrative capacity. Edwards also considers it his responsibility to engage vibrantly with the great power of this Earth at the highest artistic level. While his music is recognized globally for its value, it is deeply rooted in Australia. It celebrates Australia's widespread cultural diversity, and many forms and patterns are drawn from its natural environment—such as unique bird calls and the mysterious undulations of summer insect sounds. His meditative works, inspired by the Australian landscape, express his belief in the healing power of music.
His works, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, vocal works, children's pieces, film scores, and dance music, are performed worldwide. Among his recent works, "The Heart of Night" was premiered in April 2005 by Riley Lee (shakuhachi), conducted by Hiroyuki Iwaki with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
He resides in Sydney. His scores are primarily published by Ricordi London.
