Born in Izmir, Turkey, his father was a mathematics teacher. In 1928, he received a scholarship to study in Paris, where he was a pupil of Vincent d'Indy and others. He returned to his home country in 1931 and became a teacher at the Ankara Music School. In 1936, he obtained a teaching position in Istanbul. In the same year, he met Bartók and participated in a folk music collection trip, conducting fieldwork and transcribing many folk songs using Western musical notation. Around the same time, he began researching the collection of the Istanbul Municipal Music School, and thereafter became active as a musicologist.
