An American composer and pianist, born in Texas. He is known as the "King of Ragtime" and was the son of Black slaves. He aimed to create music that combined elements of Western music and Black music, which culminated in the musical genre known as "ragtime." His Maple Leaf Rag, published in 1899, gained immense popularity, leading to the composition of many rags thereafter.
Due to the extremely low social status of Black people in the first half of the 20th century, his posthumous reputation was not high. However, in recent years, re-evaluation has progressed, and he is now recognized as an important musician who represents the genesis of jazz music. His 1902 composition, "The Entertainer," became widely known after its use in the 1973 film The Sting, eventually becoming synonymous with Joplin and, by extension, ragtime itself.
