Born in Tokyo in 1958, Toshio Nakagawa is a composer and pianist. He graduated from Toho Gakuen School of Music, Department of Composition, where he studied composition under Akira Miyoshi and piano under Katsuyo Suemitsu and Yoko Moriyasu. He was awarded first prize for his self-performed composition at the 10th Anniversary International Composition Competition, held as part of 'Music Today '82 (planned and organized by Toru Takemitsu),' which welcomed the 70-year-old John Cage. His work was highly praised by Cage himself. He received the Muramatsu Award in 1988. In 1993, as a member of the performance and composition group 'Art Respirant,' he was awarded the 12th Kenzo Nakajima Music Award. In 2009, he received the 28th Kenzo Nakajima Music Award for his achievements at 'Composer's Exhibition 2009, Toshio Nakagawa,' organized by the Suntory Foundation for Arts. Additionally, he has received numerous awards in the field of commercial music, including the 'ACC Award.' He has engaged in numerous collaborations with artists such as singer-composer Yumi Kimura, traditional Japanese music flutist Toru Fukuhara, and stage director Hiroshi Koike. The activities of the 'Gemini Trio,' which he formed in 2005 with trumpeter Kiyotaka Sogabe and baritone Kei Matsudaira, have also garnered significant attention in recent years. From Toshiba EMI, he has released CDs including 'chai,' which features his original Suntory 'Oolong Tea CM Song Series,' and 'cocoloni utao,' which also serves as a piano solo album. Additionally, he released the CD orchestral works anthology 'The Origin of Silence' from Fontec in March 2017. He has made numerous television appearances, including on TV Asahi's 'Untitled Concert.' Currently, he holds positions as Vice President of the Japan Society for Contemporary Music, Executive Director of the Japan Federation of Composers, Vice Representative of the composers' group 'Shinshinkai,' and a part-time lecturer at Ochanomizu University.
