Born in Osaka, he studied at Tokyo University of the Arts and its graduate school. He studied under Tomojiro Ikenouchi, Akio Yashiro, Teruyuki Noda, and Yoshio Mamiya. While studying Western avant-garde compositional techniques during his time at university, he developed a strong interest in traditional Asian music, religion, and aesthetics. The heterophonic compositional style (a state where multiple voices freely perform the same melody, resulting in shifts in pitch and rhythm) derived from this interest has become a characteristic compositional technique of Nishimura today. His sonic universe, filled with immense energy and tension, is widely appreciated not only by contemporary music enthusiasts but also by a broader audience. He is currently a professor at Tokyo College of Music and a board member of the Japan Federation of Composers. He has received numerous awards, including first prize at the Music Competition of Japan, the Grand Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition, the Luigi Dallapiccola Composition Prize, the Otaka Prize, and the Kenzo Nakajima Music Award.
