An American composer who also worked as a conductor and pianist, he is best known for his musical West Side Story.
After attending Harvard University, he enrolled at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied conducting with Reiner, piano with Vengerova, and composition with Thompson. While serving as assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic, he achieved success conducting a concert as a substitute for Bruno Walter. Having gained recognition as a composer around this time, he went on to be active primarily in Europe and the Americas, both as a composer and a conductor. In addition to being appointed Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, he also actively performed as a guest conductor.
