Haruna Miyake graduated from the composition department of The Juilliard School, where she studied under Vincent Persichetti. She received the Benjamin Award (1964) for "Poem for String Orchestra." She began her career as a composer, debuting at the New York Composers' Forum and being commissioned for "Six Voices in June" (1969) for the opening concert series of Lincoln Center's Tully Hall. She has written a wide range of works, from orchestral and ensemble pieces to vocal works and those for traditional Japanese instruments.
As a pianist, she is active in the fields of classical, contemporary, and improvised music. She has collaborated with various musicians such as Frederic Rzewski, John Zorn, Wayne Shorter, Richard Stoltzman, and Sergey Kuryokhin, as well as with dancers like Kazuo Ohno and Noh actors like Hideo Kanze.
She has been invited as a composer or pianist to international music festivals such as the Lockenhaus Music Festival, Heidelberg Music Festival, Music From Japan Festival in New York, and Pan Music Festival in Seoul.

- "You are the first street..." for four percussionists (1987)
- "Play Time" for wind orchestra, piano/synthesizer (1989)
- "Snow Voice" for six female voices, accordion, and piano (1996, commissioned by Tokyo Summer Festival)
- "From a Ruined World: From the Lamentations of Jeremiah" (1997, commissioned by the National Theatre for its "Buddhist Chant" performance)
- "Night of Wind" for organ (2006, commissioned by Minato Mirai Hall), among others.
