A Finnish composer. He studied at the University of Helsinki, the Sibelius Academy, and the Juilliard School, where he was a pupil of Copland and others. Initially influenced by the Russian national school, his compositional style subsequently evolved, reflecting the trends of 20th-century music such as Neoclassicism and twelve-tone technique.
