He studied violin and piano at a music school in Vienna and began self-studying composition. Subsequently, he pursued formal studies in composition and conducting at the Vienna Music Academy. He also studied under Messiaen and Milhaud. From the 1950s onwards, he actively engaged in composition, receiving the Austrian State Prize in 1964.
He studied Webern's twelve-tone technique and analytical methods, and broadly speaking, can be said to follow the tradition of the Second Viennese School. However, Kont's unique idiom was established through more flexible compositional structures and titling methods.
