Born in Suginami-ku, Tokyo, and raised in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. Completed graduate studies at Tokyo University of the Arts and Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. From 1995 to 1997, studied in the UK as an overseas research fellow for artists sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Studied composition under Akira Kitamura, Jo Kondo, Isao Matsushita, and R. Saxton. Has been selected for and won awards including:
- Valentino Bucchi International Composition Competition (Rome)
- Ataka Award
- Special Encouragement Award for Creative Performing Arts from the Agency for Cultural Affairs
- Asahi Composition Award
- National Theatre Composition Competition
- Jury's Special Award at the Genesis Opera Composition Prize (London)
