Author: Saitoh, Noriko
German composer. Also active as an organist. His suites and toccatas for keyboard are precursors to the later works of J.S. Bach. He received his initial musical training from his father and studied under the organist Schützschraeder. After serving as court organist in Vienna, he received a scholarship to study in Rome under Frescobaldi. Upon his return, he resumed his position as court organist in Vienna and continued his compositional activities. In Froberger's suites for keyboard, the movements were originally arranged in the order of "Allemande – Gigue – Courante – Sarabande," but in posthumous publications, the Gigue was placed at the end of the suite. His toccatas most clearly demonstrate the influence of his studies under Frescobaldi, particularly evident in the contrast between the improvisatory and fugal sections.
