Australian composer, pianist, and musicologist. Born in Tianjin, northern China, in 1934, to Russian-Jewish parents. In 1951, he emigrated to Australia with his family. After studying piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music from the following year, he moved to San Francisco to study under E. Petri, and began composing around this time. Returning to Australia in 1961, he taught piano, musicology, and composition at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Canberra School of Music, and Australian National University.
Sitsky stands in the tradition of composer-pianists extending from the 19th century, including figures such as Chopin, Liszt, Anton Rubinstein, and Busoni. His own compositions are characterized by serialist techniques, dense textures, and contrapuntal treatment. He also composes for special instruments such as the double-keyboard piano and for unusual instrumental combinations. His work as a musicologist includes research on Busoni. Furthermore, he has dedicated significant effort to systematically compiling Australian musical works. Numerous recordings released as part of a series, and publications such as Australian Piano Music of the Twentieth Century (Praeger Pub, 2005), are highly important resources in this field.
