British composer. Influenced by Bartók, Stravinsky, and Schoenberg, he became one of the composers who established a unique style in Britain after World War II. He composed symphonies, concertos for various instruments, and works for chamber orchestra. His piano-related compositions include piano concertos and works for solo piano. He was skilled in counterpoint. After studying at the Royal College of Music in London, he studied composition with Seiber. In 1950, he received the Koussevitzky Award for his Symphony No. 1. He also engaged in teaching, serving as Professor of Composition at his alma mater, the Royal College of Music in London, Head of Music at Morley College, and Professor of Music at the University of California, Berkeley.
