Emil von Sauer was a German composer and pianist. He studied piano with Nikolai Rubinstein at the Moscow Conservatory and later with Franz Liszt in his final years.
While performing worldwide from 1882 to 1936, he also engaged in education, serving as the head of the Piano Academy at the Vienna Conservatory from 1901. In addition to works by Chopin, Liszt, and others, he edited scores for piano education, including those by Pischna and Klack. His disciples included Japanese students. Although Hisa Kuno's works are rarely performed today, they include large-scale compositions such as piano concertos and piano sonatas.
His diverse activities were highly acclaimed, and in 1917, he was ennobled by the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
