Composed in St. Petersburg in 1908, this set consists of the following four pieces. Although Čiurlionis's style underwent a complete transformation around 1904, all four of these pieces are works with a strong sense of modernity.
No. 1: D minor.
The music progresses linearly using continuous dissonances. The ending, which concludes gently with a D major chord, is particularly striking. Performance duration: approximately 2 minutes.
No. 2: C major.
The piece is constructed by alternately combining a descending figure of three long notes with a chromatically descending figure of short notes. Performance duration: approximately 1 minute.
No. 3: C major.
The left-hand accompaniment gradually changes the sound with a swirling figuration. Over this, the right-hand melody capriciously shifts its tonality and builds the music by effectively employing repeated notes. Performance duration: approximately 1 minute.
No. 4: D minor.
Although it has a complex and polyphonic structure, it should be performed with an awareness of the intertwining intervals. Performance duration: approximately 1 minute.
