Born in Varėna, Lithuania, in 1875, he was a Lithuanian raised in Poland and was known as the “Soul of Lithuania.” He was also a painter, leaving behind not only music but also numerous paintings. His activities as a painter garnered attention during his lifetime, and he is known to have influenced Kandinsky. As a musician, he is not widely known today. However, he displayed talent from an early age and achieved excellent results at the Warsaw Conservatory. He studied piano with Mieczysław Brzeziński and Zygmunt Szygietiński, and composition with Zygmunt Noskowski. Although his life was short, he left behind nearly 300 piano pieces throughout his career, in which his spirituality can be clearly observed. Much of his music is simple, often employing forms such as ternary form. He was strongly influenced by Chopin, and his delicate, lyrical, and melancholic style is also characteristic. Furthermore, a significant stylistic change can be observed, particularly from 1904 onwards. In his later years, he suffered from mental illness. He passed away in 1911, ending his short life of 35 years.
