In this piece, a clear distinction between the melody line and other lines is desired. Rather than a performance where it becomes unclear which is the melody line and which are other lines, it is preferable to vary the tone quality and volume, aiming for a slightly blurred effect for lines other than the melody.
Attention to this aspect should be paid from the first measure. The inner voice in the right hand, entering on the off-beat of the first beat, is not the melody line; therefore, it should be played as softly as possible (pp). The same applies thereafter. From measures 17 to 24, the melody line shifts to the inner voice in the treble clef, becoming the lower voice and forming an octave relationship with the left hand.
The tempo indication states "like a slow waltz," and the metronome marking is quarter note = 138. However, playing at an even slower tempo than this can bring out a unique character, resulting in a captivating performance in its own right. Please experiment with various tempos. And of course, applying a certain degree of rubato is recommended.
