Mayumi Tannai (Piano, Composition/Arrangement)
Born in Onomichi City, Mayumi Tannai graduated from the Piano Department of Tokyo College of Music and the Jazz Piano Department of Yamaha Music Academy. She studied piano under Emiko Harimoto, Takako Nagai, Matthias Fuchs, and Yves Henry, and jazz piano under Eiichi Fujii, and harmony under Tsuneya Tanabe. Specializing in improvisation, she is a pianist capable of composition and arrangement, handling stage music across various genres in addition to concerts and recordings. She received the Grand Prize for her original composition at the Yamaha GX Contest, and the following year, she was awarded the Special Jury Prize by Isao Tomita.
In 2007, she served as the pianist for the Philharmonia Chamber Orchestra. She was in charge of music for the Kanagawa Citizens' Musical for 10 years, which was also restaged at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. In 2009, she was responsible for arranging traditional Japanese songs (wakakyoku) for the first time in history, including Miho Okami's "Motoori Norinaga in Song" and "Nara Yaezakura in Song," which were performed at the Mitsukoshi Theatre. Since October 2013, she has provided arrangements for every episode of Maho Oshima's FM-FUJI radio program "Night Moves." At the Onomichi Minato Festival, she was responsible for arranging and performing "Eejyan SANSA-gari." This has become a major annual event, a creative dance contest with 6,000 participants, and she serves as the head judge every year.
In recent years, she has assisted in creating a new world for the ocarina as an accompanist for the internationally active ocarina player, Satoshi Osawa. She also provides original compositions and arrangements for soloists such as violinist Kimiko Nakazawa, vocalist Akane Chiba, and global singer Miho Okami. She is a PTNA Piano Step Advisor and conducts talk concerts and seminars nationwide. For many years, she has been dedicated to popular music education, and her seminars with Tomoko Sadohara are always well-received.
