Biography and Career
Carl Vine gained initial renown in Australia as a composer in the field of dance music, with over 20 of his dance works highly acclaimed. Vine's current catalogue of works lists six symphonies and six concertos, music for film, television, and theatrical productions, electronic music, and numerous chamber works. While primarily a contemporary "classical" music composer, he has also undertaken a wide range of projects, including arrangements of the Australian national anthem and composing music for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games introduction segment at the closing ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Early Life and Education
Born in Perth, he studied piano with Stephen Dornan and composition with John Exton at the University of Western Australia. After moving to Sydney in 1975, he worked for several decades as a freelance pianist and composed for numerous chamber ensembles, theatres, and dance companies.

- Piano Sonata (1990)
- Poppy (1978) for the Sydney Dance Company
- Piano Sonata No. 2 (1997) composed for Michael Kieran Harvey
- Symphony No. 6 (Choral) (1996) composed for the West Australian Symphony Orchestra
All of his symphonies can be heard performed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra on the ABC Classics release Carl Vine: Complete Symphonies. Other orchestral works are also available on the same label, and most of his chamber music has been released by Tall Poppies Records (TP013, TP120).
Recent Activities
Since 2000, Vine has served as the Artistic Director of Musica Viva Australia, the world's largest chamber music organization. Recent works include:
- Pipe Dreams for Emmanuel Pahud and the Australian Chamber Orchestra
- Cello Concerto composed for Steven Isserlis and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra
- String Quartet No. 4 for the Takács Quartet
