Born in Melbourne, Australia, then a British territory, he received higher music education in Frankfurt, Germany, and began his career in England. Prompted by World War I, he moved to the United States, where he achieved success as a pianist and composer.
He dedicated himself to collecting folk music, and the "Grainger Museum" in Melbourne was conceived as a place to house the results of his efforts.
Anecdotes portray him as a "health enthusiast"; he was deeply religious and a vegetarian, and it is said that he would walk between concert venues with a knapsack on his back and run up stairs.
